Description

This course aims at developing students’ basic syntactical knowledge learned in Syntax I class. The class will strengthen the students understanding about basic concepts in syntax which include: phrase structure rule, tree diagram analysis, and transformation.  Some advanced concepts will be introduced to the students in relation to generative syntax including: structural relations, binding theory, X-bar, and advanced transformation.

Objectives

By the end of this course the students are expected to:

1.       have an understanding of syntactical concepts for analyzing simple structures

2.       have an preliminary competence in analyzing complex structures

3.       have a basic understanding of generative syntax to be applied in syntactical analysis on other languages, beside English.
